Welcome to DASH Rescue

JethroThis is Jethro.  He was surrendered to DASH Rescue because he had fallen down some stairs and now is paralyzed in the back end. This poor little guy went without any Medical treatment for 5 days because his Mommy couldn't afford the treatments that he needed. He was allowed to drag himself around, which has also complicated his recovery a bit.  He was rushed to our vets Friday night 1/27/12 where we had him evaluated to find out what his options are at this time. So far so good and we are very hopeful that the steroids, pain meds and the acupuncture will work for him, but as some of you know this will be not be very easy and may not work, We will know more in the next couple of days. I will keep everyone updated on how this very handsome guy is doing along the way.  His next acupuncture treatment will be on Wed 2/1/12 and at that time we will do a reevaluation to see if we stay the course or if we switch to surgery.
Jethro is such a real sweet boy with everything that has happened to him and all the poking andJethro1 prodding that he had done to him last night.  He allowed it all and was still happy to give us a kiss or two. He didn't fuss much last night at all but slept all through the night. This morning though he is slightly upset that he is in a crate and being rather fussy about it. This is the hardest part of his recovery - ignoring all the barking and making him lay down in a crate that he doesn't like being in.

In the mean time if you would like to donate to Jethro's care and become his Guardian Angel please click on the link link below. All monies raised will be for the care of Jethro and if there is any left will go towards another baby in need of help.

Jethro update 2/1/12- He is doing wonderfully and gaining strength in his legs, one better than the other but it’s much better then what he had. Today he visited Dr. Giza and she was very happy with his progress. He had another acupuncture treatment today.  Shortly after, he was standing in the crate all by himself. Even though he can stand pretty good on his own he is still on crate rest and I assist him when he goes out to potty. We are hoping after a week in the crate we can start doing some Physical Therapy, but for now it’s more rest so he can heal.

Do you know what to do for a Dachshund that has hurt his back, is having trouble walking, or has become paralyzed in the back? The first thing that you need to do is to get them into a crate, x-pen, a laundry basket or even a childs playpen something that will restrict their movements. The second thing that you need to do is call your Vet right away. The longer you wait to seek medical treatment, the harder the road to recovery can be. Please do not think that he will get better on his own, time is of the essence right now to have any type recovery. There are 2 types of treatments that can be taken, surgery or the conservative treatment (medications and crate rest) your vet will advise you of your options. If your dog has become paralyzed permanently, they can still have an excellent quality of life that is happy and comfortable with the aid of a cart.
